Mariya Ivancheva is a PhD student at the department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Central European University. Since 2008 she has carried out fieldwork in Caracas, Venezuela on higher education, intellectual and student movements, and urban squatters. In her talk she will bring together some observations on some directions in which the Bolivarian Revolution – the promise of mighty change of social structures that the government of President Hugo Chavez has been in power since 1999 – has developed over the last few years. Using examples from her fieldwork experience, she will speak of the everyday challenges of ‘changing the world by taking power’: of the difficulties of advancing a leftward social change within a complex field of hostile external and contradictory internal forces.
